Hernia Repair (Pre-Congress Workshop of APHS)

24 October 2007

Introduction

This is a one-day programme offering a comprehensive overview on the multidisciplinary management of hernia patients. We will focus on both open and laparoscopic surgery for Hernia Repair and discuss the most recent advances of medical and surgical treatment. Abdominal Wall Hernia is a common problem around the world with an incidence that ranges between 12 and 16 per 1000 population. In countries like United States the total number of herniorrhaphies performed is around 7-800,000/year. Since Bassini, established the concept of suture repair more than 100 years ago, the surgical treatment of hernia repair has evolved in the last 20 years. Today, different approaches are available, from suture repair in different fashion to tension-free repair, and from laparoscopic to preperitoneal repair, all these with good surgical outcome in terms of recurrence, chronic pain and cost. The key of the success, is that each approach must be choosen depending upon local circumstances such as surgeon training and skill, equipment availability, anesthesia, patient’s clinical condition.
